This was a big hit in the tiny Magic subforum I used to hang out in, so I thought I'd try it here.

In a method similar to the AFH Caption Contest, in each round, the judge posts a criteria (e.g. Create a trap that doesn't damage the attacking monsters), and once a bunch of people have submitted, the judge picks a winner, who is then the judge for the next round.

These are fantasy cards, so cards can do things that aren't yet programmed into CMC (such as multiple targets for an ability), unless the criteria specifically says otherwise (or if it's implied, as in this first criteria) Similarly, if a card is mildly over/underpowered, this doesn't factor in to the judging.

Anyway, your first assignment is to create a card that looks as if it could have been in the Prime expansion.

Destroyed: Lose half your life rounded up and put Dark Lord Khrima (prime) into play as a token.
Update them to the current rules, but make them feel like Prime cards.
Hmm...make them like they can be applied to the mechanic of Prime or make is so that they could have been cards from Prime during only Prime?
The second, from what I understand. He said that we could make new mechanics, for instance.
Yes, that's right. They have to feel like they're from Prime. It's a fairly vague criteria, I realize.

To the reader: If you think the Prime-feel of a card is more of a holistic matter than a componential thing, you might as well ignore the rest of this post. If you want to read it (and tell me how I'm wrong) anyway, that's fine too. I'm looking forward to it.

Blind Loyalty
"Loyalty" is weird on a dark card. It's obscure in comparison to other dark spells, and also a follower-only spell in a set that tried to distribute attention to not only followers but skeletons, horrors, and demons. It can't be used without another card, which it names. Does not fit in with Prime's general trend of having unique entities provide racial synergies. Is a temporary boost, which is also unusual.

Kelar Ranger
Doesn't fit general Grey trend for equal attack/life. Failing that, doesn't fit the Prime grey trend of having less attack than life, either. Has strange sac, not having second life or such to warrant such. Has no apparent card type or creature type. Kelar creatures have been "civilized" sorts (citizen, scholar) and army/mage type units, whereas a ranger is more of a forest/outlands type unit. Named "Kelar ____" according to the trend.

Life Drain
Despite it resembling cannabalize, goes against general "use life to get other effects" trend. 50 direct damage is same as Kerpow, but is a different color.

A Bowl of Oranges
Something that does absolutely nothing until destroyed has no precedent, unless you want to claim it has something to do with sac mana, but that's stretching it. Also no precedent of creating a unique (as in the mechanic, not like Gloops) monster from another card. Prime effects were also less abstract/referential than this is (Diplomacy is perhaps an exceptional, but definitely still not as referential to ADV). Does have a nice connection to the prime Khrima.

Holy Defender
Temporary life doesn't appear till Twelve Stars and Valian's Resolve, neither of which are clerics. Takes up the same cc-slot as two other clerics. Shares the same attack as those two clerics. Not unique but provides an "all of type" racial bonus, similar to shadow's card. Follows the "Holy _____" convention.

Kelar Attack Dog
Gains attack only, which differentiates it from General's and Meilar's pumping. Is a hound, which is not even a type on Skeletal Hounds. Gets a boost based on number of dark elves in play, like Manamancer or (kinda) General and Joey, Slime Fan. Gets a constant modifier, unlike Fairy Dragon. Has a "Kelar _____" name.
So....you're just giving you opinions on each card? 'cause it's Ultros that's the judge. <_<
Year 1 cake does nothing while in play (admittedly though it does draw a card upon into play, but otherwise while it's in play it's worthless)

Your criticism is noted however.
Just a note, Valian the Reborn(AKA: Valian Iridith) does appear in Prime, he is the Resurrection and Holy Strength Card. So paladins do exist as cards in Prime, just not as a monster type yet.
I agree with what azul's analysis. And yeah, while he's not the judge, the judge's opinion usually comes at the time of judgement, when it's too late to change your entry.

Also, Year One Cake isn't Prime at all. I'm sure that other expansions had been released before Y1C was as well.
Yeah, I think that was during Prince, maybe.
