Pokémon - NOLDER - 02-18-2009 09:48 PM because we really needed an all encompassing pokemon thread at this point ok so discussion here should be limited to pokemon games (including spin offs, the TCG, ect) since it's in the gaming subforum if you want to discuss the anime and other such things there's a place for that RE: Pokemon - NOLDER - 02-18-2009 09:50 PM i'll start the thread off with a question what sorts of things lower the happiness of a pokemon? is there a way i can keep it low so that frustration is actually a decent move? RE: Pokemon - masamunemaniac - 02-18-2009 09:59 PM Getting the pokémon KO'd, giving them bitter medicines, a couple other things. Not increasing the happiness is the problem. Every 256 or whatever steps, every level up, every stat+ vitamin, these kinds of things increase happiness. If you get to the minimum happiness, and just take the pokémon out for online battling etc, then it's a lot more feasible. If it's a pokémon you intend to actually use, Return is much more practical. RE: Pokemon - NOLDER - 02-18-2009 10:05 PM fucking walking? that's bullshit... they better do something about this in gen 5 anyway the pokemon is slowking and i was kind of going for a...theme...sort of i was going to teach it Trump Card, Trick Room, Substitute, and Frustration he was going to be a very tricky slowking i dunno how good that would be in a competitive setting but it sounds interesting enough to me to try it so i guess i'll get his happiness to a minimum and then throw him in a box or something do you know of a way to accurately gauge what a pokemons happiness is? RE: Pokemon - masamunemaniac - 02-18-2009 10:32 PM The footstep man semi-tells you. You get generic descriptions that relate to different ranges but not specific numbers. It's easier for max happiness, as once it's maxed the footstep man gives you a ribbon. I'm talking D/P here, and presumably Pt. If you're playing 3rd gen I can't quite remember... RE: Pokemon - Fanirar - 02-19-2009 12:37 AM There's also a Poketch application that has your party floating around and if you click and hold on one, you can tell how happy it is by the hearts that pop up (~max happy has 3 levels of hearts). And he must be talking 4th...Trump card is new. Never used it myself... RE: Pokemon - NOLDER - 02-19-2009 01:51 AM i'm currently playing through leafgreen and emerald a friend is borrowing my diamond but when i get it back i'll be doing a bunch of stuff with it RE: Pokemon - Pierrot - 02-22-2009 03:32 AM I would have bought every shirt from PKMN151. RE: Pokemon - sXeAndriex - 02-22-2009 09:25 PM Actually, I probably would have picked one or two up myself. I love dorky shirts that are purposefully not dorky (like my Madrox (comic character) shirt which apparently isn't online anymore.) While I don't want to be *that guy* who goes on fan threads and complains about the game, I'm honestly curious about something: was anyone else unhappy with Pkmn diamond/whatever? I just started playing it and... yeah, it's not been fun. RE: Pokemon - Shadowhunter - 02-22-2009 09:46 PM I've actually never disliked it. RE: Pokemon - masamunemaniac - 02-22-2009 09:57 PM 1st gen was the best by far. They're not as good as games, but they were new, there was the aspect of discovery and reward, there was a load of exploration (it seemed that way anyway, in hindsight there wasn't). 2nd gen was good too, but there was still the element of knowing most everything, although the +66% more pokémon was pretty cool. 3rd gen, there just wasn't as much excitement. 4th gen, the internet was more aware of what's going on in Japan and how it'll affect us, so spoilers weren't just readily available, they were pretty hard to avoid or ignore. I knew everything in advance, admittedly somewhat voluntarily, but even if it wasn't I'd have known anyway. But that aside, the storyline was very boring in D/P. The beginning, heading over to the lake and stuff, it was a whole lot more interesting than generic Professor's Lab intro... but then you got the generic Professor's Lab intro at the second town, so yeah. After that, it was just the same as always. Beat all the Gym Leaders for little or no reason. Team Antagonist's storyline (ie the interesting part of a pokémon game's storyline) just wasn't as interesting as before, and its culmination was just ridiculous. Gaining mafia-like control of the country is cool. Gaining mafia-like control of the country again is... actually, that was pretty crap in hindsight. Either flooding or unflooding the area (world?) was okay. Obliterating and reconstructing the world? No, that's just plain silly, especially how the plan is foiled (go ahead and release those pokémon | oh no those released pokémon stopped me!). I mean... Mewtwo had a power level over 9000, but he couldn't rewrite all of reality. A lot of stuff in pokémon is fairly stupid, but it's fairly consistent. This was just a completely new level. RE: Pokemon - Haplo_64 - 02-22-2009 10:14 PM If you play Pokemon for the story, I think you're sadly misguided. All I want is a Pokemon game with real-time battles. Being able to dodge/lead etc would be the best thing ever. Obviously it would have to be on the Wii (Or the next Nintendo Console) RE: Pokemon - masamunemaniac - 02-22-2009 10:21 PM Pokémon with a Tales of ____ battle system RE: Pokemon - Fanirar - 02-23-2009 12:58 AM (Spoilers for those who actually care about the story...) I thought the best part of the story in D/P was when the bomb went off. I'd never thought geological terrorism would get through censors... Which brings me to my point... Mewtwo was never really in a position to do any heavy damage, but the essence or manifestation of Time Space and Dimensions, they seem pretty equip to do whatever they want, or rather, have the potetial, not sure they have the brains to. It is a bit silly to think that someone wants to recreate the world when put simply, but really, that is all anyone is aiming for; and since they HAD time and space involved, it would follow that they would try to use those tools and recreate anything they wanted with them, namely, time and space. The PokeWorld just got bigger, first it was a Region, then the World, now the Universe. RE: Pokemon - masamunemaniac - 02-23-2009 06:28 AM That's the thing - Mewtwo and even Groudon and Kyogre, were doing things that other pokémon could do already, just on a much larger scale. And it wasn't even world then, for the latter two it was region (was it even all the region? I'm pretty sure with Groudon out you could go back to some earlier locations and see normal weather, including rain in some places). They were just the nuclear equivalent to bombs. Dialga and Palkia (and particularly Arceus) though... they're not nuclear bombs... they're God. That's just pretty messed up, even in the pokémon universe. RE: Pokemon - Shadowhunter - 02-23-2009 08:13 AM Yeah, unfortunately Nintendo is bound to release even more Gods 5th gen and on to keep the kids excited. Dumb little kids. Perhaps, but just a few years ago people were calling Mew God. No one had a problem there. And Celebi was able to run about time. It wasn't until now that his powers were actually refined and he was said to ''not control it, but jump through it.'' Arceus is God why? Because it's the strongest...? Each Gen that follows always brings another set of Pokemon that is stronger than the ones before it. Is it God because it 'created the universe'? I am sure we'll soon find out that Arceus is just the Messenger for another pokemon who is stronger than it (probably why it's a Deer, very traditional), and that Arceus is just doing his/her/its work. Like the ''son of god''. Which is what I heard people call Mewtwo. Or maybe not... you know. Just saying, it is in fact possible to make something beyond Arceus. Really, it just boils down to what you think is Strong Enough to be God. And giving that label to an entity till something else comes along that suits your fancy. It's a bit of a recycled story line, yes, but it's different enough so that it's not the same thing again, but rather more expansive, greater each time. And each time they managed to add layers of myth and legends that still seem to inspire thousands of people. For one, I think the stories have all gone in a predictable but pleasant route. I'm not saying the series is perfect, but I really don't think that one Gen is betters than the other, as far as main story line goes. Pokemon design on the other hand. -.-;; Edit: (02-23-2009 08:13 AM)Sandslash Wrote: Yeah, unfortunately Nintendo is bound to release even more Gods 5th gen and on to keep the kids excited. Dumb little kids. I am uncertain about a Gen V. They seem to be making enough spin off games, and are at a part in game series, where I think they can end the Trainers story. I can see spin off games becoming more prominent. Maybe a story about Coordinators/Breeders/Gardeners. And other things. MD is pretty popular now too. Pokemon is so vast now that they don't have to rely on the Trainer Series to keep going. Though, there are a few things they could add to the Series tha would make it interesting, storywise and gameplay. So yeah. I can see them ending now, and I can see them ending in the near future, I really don't see Gen VII, VIII, IX, XXX, etc. RE: Pokemon - Shadowhunter - 02-23-2009 12:42 PM Are you saying that Arceus is the Silver Surfer? RE: Pokemon - Kennisiou - 02-23-2009 12:44 PM But, dude, you forget: it's Nintendo. They're going to keep making the series even after they have no new ground to cover, and fans will keep buying it. Just look at traditional-style Mario games. Just look at all of their Zelda games. |
