New Forum Features
Just for reference, here are some of the new things the forum has:

CALENDAR with automatic birthdays

FILE ATTACHMENT - you don't /need/ an image host to post images on this forum. Allowed files right now are as follows: Images (most formats) 500 KB. HTML, CSS 100 KB. Gzip, tar, and zip 1meg. Doc 1 meg. text 200KB. PHP 500 KB.

REPUTATION - every ten in either direction adds a block (-10 will add two red blocks, +25 will be 3, etc)

STARS: I can change the post rank stars to be different symbols at different ranks! Like my webrunner iconS!

QUICK REPLY: Can reply to a thread without going to the reply page.

Am I forgetting any?

RE: New Forum Features
Heres a cool feature: Threaded mode.

At the bottom of the various thread pages, you may notice two buttons which say "Linear mode" and "Threaded mode." Linear is normal, but Threaded lets you access ANY individual post in the thread! Convieniant-tastic!

I was wondering what those did. Weird.

EDIT: Ick. Remind me to never use that again.

Well in theory when there's multiple conversations going on in the same topic threaded view should make it obvious which is which. That is, assuming people use the quote button or use appropriate subjects (which it is probably based on)

(Note that in threaded view my message appears before Ryk's as I replied directly to shadowhunter)

RE: New Forum Features
Ahh, I, too was wondering about that, but was too scared to try it.
The reputation thing reminds me of similar systems on other forums (like Runescape Community), only those were only changeable by admins/mods. Actually, the Star system seems closer to the other recognition system...
As for threaded mode....gah, I've seen that on other forums, too, and I hate it...I much prefer linear, even if it is sometimes harder to follow seperate convos.
Quick reply is good, that is, in anywhere but Spam (since people post so fast in Spam, your post might be made moot in the time it takes to write it...)
I just noticed the "Review Thread" button, though I think it might work better if it opened in a new window automatically...but that's just me.

RE: New Forum Features
The stars AND the reputation seem to be a bit much, to me. Plus the stars seperate rank and avatar, so all of Tamdrik's works are gone.

RE: New Forum Features
Actually, there's:
Rank Image (Rank Avatar)
Stars (for post count)
Post Count
Reputation
Stars (for rating)

I pretty much like all but the post count stars.

Oh, and for the people who haven't found it yet: you can rate posters on their profile, and it will give an average score in stars (1 to 5 scale).

RE: New Forum Features
It is, however, missing one of PHPBB's most useful features: The navigation links at the bottom of the page. When I read all the way through a thread and I don't have a reply to make, I want to be able to immediately click back to the forum I was in, or to the Index, instead of having to scroll all the way back to the top of the page.
Also, the tab order is different and you don't have the option of going straight back to the forum (or the Index) after you post. Since I don't use attachments all that much here, I'd have to rate these convenience problems pretty strongly and say I liked PHPBB better.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Mason

RE: New Forum Features
There's a Return To Top button at the bottom, though that doesn't quite solve the problem.

PHPBB has some really nasty things for administrating and all in all this forum is easier to administrate.

RE: New Forum Features
So it's either a little more convenience by default, or a little more freedom to play with settings and the like... besides, if they're nice they may allow limited recoding, and it could be possible to add what Mason's talking about to the bottom of pages as well (I miss it, too.)

Also: I HAVE MY MANHOOD OVER HERE TOO, NOW, MR BOB. WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY TO THAT, HUH?!

... and uh, people who registered yesterday, try changing your profile now for some new spiffy questions added by Webby.

RE: New Forum Features
I probably could add the 'link back' thing. but I'm not in the 'edit the php files' mood I'd need to be.
