Wait, what?
There's nothing wrong with Mage Nog as it is. Even if it needed a change, what you're suggesting is too much. Change that 'and' to an 'or' and it might be worth something.

RE: nerf Magenog
The unique probably wouldn't be as important if the speed got dropped, but multiple does make them even more powerful.
I do think it does definitely need tweeking, though. I was shut down completely in a recent game by magnogs when I had direct-damage spells, large creatures, and a couple other creature-affecting spells.

That's never an excuse for balance.
Q99 Wrote:... and it be made unique.
Unique can never be asked for for balance reasons. It's a flavor thing and I'm going to go out on a limb and guess there isn't only one pitcher of Mage Nog in the world.
Also before any wild ideas are thrown in (speed nerf is not a wild idea), cost of 4/4/4 had minor support in this thread but we wanted to be conservative at the time.

RE: nerf Magenog
Adding or removing uniqueness isn't something we're supposed to do; it's a flavour thing, not a balance thing. That should probably be in the Balance Codex; not sure why it isn't.
I'd like to see more discussion before I say whether it needs to be nerfed again or not. A speed decrease would definitely be my preferred change, though; it would let many more damage spells/abilities kill the monster without hurting Nog's ability to protect something in combat.

RE: nerf Magenog
That makes sense. It's the speed one that I'm more concerned about anyway.
My view does admittedly come from only one game, but spending eight turns and using several medium sized creatures, a laser, a snowball, and two WYBMs (trying to take advantage of the fact it can't be used on opponent's creatures) and only managed to get one kill, using an alien lawyers, so I think the sample was still pretty big. Â
I also found out the 'set life to 3' works even if the Magnog is countered (discovered during the snowball try).

I vote for speed. Make it easier to kill the noglings with sniping, while keeping the combat effectiveness the same.

RE: nerf Magenog
i vote keep it the same since most snipers are C speed or above so in your turn you can kill them with no trouble.

That's because it's the cost for the ability, not the actual ability itself.

RE: nerf Magenog
Hmm, if you make your Battery of Souls the same speed as Mage Nog (with Accelerator, most likely), you could then stack a bunch of alternating activations of it and Mage Nog to get a ton of BoS counters. Mage Nog fails after the first time it resolves, but its failure cost still resets the Lifebar monster's life to 3 between each Battery of Souls activation. You could do the same with Melrak Inquisitor.
Possible balance issue, though I couldn't say without actually seeing it in action.

Oh yea, I forgot about that early on.
The thing that struck me is pretty much anything other than effect destruction would've probably not even netted a follower unless you made a mistake.

Would this be a bug, or just the kind of thing that makes you an ass, like BoS+Noble Sac?

I couldn't call it a bug, since it would work exactly as one would expect it to.

RE: nerf Magenog
I think using the failure cost like that would be pretty neat (a cunning application of game mechanics), myself.
I don't have an amazing amount of experience with Mage Nogg, but I'd say that it's fine. Powerful, yes, but fine.
edit: a speed drop would be okay. I wouldn't agree to a cost increase at this time though.

RE: nerf Magenog
I believe that mage nog is fine as is. It very powerful but leaves a monster very weak, is easy to stop, and only works if it is used in a combo.
