I lol'd.

So, I was thinking of making a pokemon... challenge, if you will. randomly get 15 pokemon of which you are allowed to catch through out the game, and nothing beyond these 15 (evolutionary lines, from gen 1 only) . only allowed to have 2+#ofbadges pkmn. and have to play on set. working out other kinks.... actually... blah blah. i played the game like this, it wasn't hard, but it wasn't easy like normally is. it's fun if nothing else.
Only issue is the whole must have Surf, Strength, Cut issue... That isn't really an issue cuz pokemon are varied enough to have these three in your pool.

Really, allowing 2+#ofbadges... you should have enough for your "Team" by the second badge and your HM slaves by the fourth, which is about when you need it.

Going solo with anything (but preferably not the starter) is more fun.
With the HM slaves, of course.

It's not that easy.
There is the issue of ''randomly'' getting the Pokemon, this means that it's possible to get a lot of ''later in game'' pokemon.
I started off with Charmander and Pikachu, and could not get anything else before Brock besides Spearow. Cool thing was that Charmander learned Metal Claw, which I wasn't aware of... So it was pretty nice, but if he hadn't, I would have had a hard time.

But yeah, it doesn't sound terrible, and it really isn't. At times it gets, a bit more complicated than you'd think.

Also, was thinking of no held items. Or some kind of restriction on that...

I preferred having the IRC decide on my entire party. And name them.

All legendaries are terrible and boring, with the exception of Articuno and Kyogre who just looks awesome

exactly. lugia is pretty bland, it can't do anything unique really.

besides that, ho-oh is based on a far more interesting mythology.

That reminds me of an RM2K game I played for two minutes, Shichimenchouken or somesuch. This may be completely irrelevant.

Pokemon mythology is just real world mythology lumped together with the names changed. It's entertaining in the "what will they rip off this time?" sort of way.

I'm expecting a 1/2th taoist immortal, 1/5th dualistic hindu brahman, and the rest being a mangled space giraffe with wings which would make darwin cream his jeans.

My Platinum dex is up to 406... and I like pointy things.

Also, I'm getting gold.
