Every time you battle. It's that simple.

The odds of finding a shiny increase with the Pokéradar because you're actually getting four or so (however many grass patches shake) chances at finding a shiny each time.

Let's say the base chance is 1/8192 (I can't remember the exact number but it's 2ⁿ). That chance is applied to each patch of grass that shakes (as you can tell whether it's shiny or not beforehand). So the chance each time of there being a shiny jumps from 0.012207% to 0.0488192%, even before you start a chain. Do that fifty times, and you've got 2.4119904% chance of having found a shiny.

There's a widespread belief that higher chains does increase your odds beyond this, but last time I checked nobody had found any evidence in the code to back this. Last time I checked was forever ago though.

I thought widespread belief was that after 40 (or so) the chances were constant.

1) I meant chances increased beyond the initial 1/8192 or whatever, not beyong 50 chains.
2) What part of "last time I checked nobody had found any evidence in the code to back this" did you not understand?
3) Do you really think it'd be widespread knowledge after being discovered only three months ago?

does anyone else nickname pokemon?

Yeah, mainly after characters from anime and other games, with a few mythic beasts for good measure. I liked obscure references, like ghosts named Ash, or psychics named Kaoru.

I tend to have the IRC suggest pokemon nicknames and choose the most interesting/worst of the bunch.

If it's a pokémon I'll never actually use, I'll nickname it the same as the pokémon's name, but in proper case (so I'll nickname Lickitung as "Lickitung" instead of "LICKITUNG"). Actually, does it do that automatically in 4th gen, I can't remember? It always annoyed me before, especially with traded pokémon.

I name them random names. Trying to make them sound odd, but cool. Kinda like names you'd find reading that horror-writing guy... um... Not stephen king, but someone else. Names along the lines of Cth'ullu, Fra'knag and such though.

Well it started with naming Glacion Victor/Victoria, after Dr.Victor Freeze, and Leafeon "Venus", after a venus fly trap, and moved on from there. I like my second set better, but it took me a half hour to find all those names.
