RE: Create-A-Card Competition
Even if Alice's hallucinations or dreams or whatever you want to call them aren't physical parallel worlds, they are imagined parallel worlds. Wonderland certainly isn't on earth anywhere. So IMO it works but I do understand why others might disagree. Plus Wikipedia used it as an example of high fantasy, which is another reason why I thought it would be a safe enough choice.

I dunno
if we're talking about the book then I wouldn't call it Epic Fantasy myself
I can see how the newest film version could be seen as Epic Fantasy though

I don't think the neverending story is considered epic fantasy (though it probably should be, maybe it's too old or something)

RE: Create-A-Card Competition
It takes place in a parallel world so why wouldn't it be?

RE: Create-A-Card Competition
Neverending Story and such "stranger stuck in a strange land" stories/movies skirt the edge of high fantasy because they typically have an "anchor" to reality via the stranger. Alice in Wonderland, for example, gives you a grounded (if possibly delusional/dreaming) person in an exotic land. If Alice herself was a magician or whatnot and she didn't come from "earth" it would be easy to say it's high fantasy.

To take this further, take The Wizard of Oz where you have not one but two "strangers in a strange land" (Dorthy and the "Wizard" himself). There you have a combination of fantastic (a living scarecrow, a man made out of tin, talking animals, magic users, etc.) and mundane (Dorthy is a normal girl, the Wizard uses amateur magic tricks and illusions rather than real magic, only "people" have civilizations, etc.).

If you want to be safe, pick subjects that have no strong connections to the real world (basically just about anything you'd find in a typical D&D game). The less sense it makes, the more fantastic.

I dunno if there's an urusula outside of disney's little mermaid but if there isn't: urusula was an octopus not a fish (so octomaid? lol)

also I like the trident
I'd use it in a fish deck for sure

But I don't watch/read fantasies that are like D&D. Icon_sad

It's been over a month, probably about time for Bugle to judge, anyways.

RE: Create-A-Card Competition
I read Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit and I thought all of them were exceptionally terrible. So I gave up on the genre.

RE: Create-A-Card Competition
There's always Lord of the Rings. Also Adventurers, while being a parody of generic RPG games, is high fantasy (albeit the videogame world elements detract from that somewhat, but if you ignore them things like Evil Pants are certainly high fantasy).

EDIT: If it makes you feel any better, I was never a fan of Harry Potter myself. Too much mixing of real world and high fantasy for my tastes.

RE: Create-A-Card Competition
HP is debatebly terrible/amazing
especially because it's childrens/young adult fantasy

the hobbit is great imo
very simple and really meant for a younger crowd
it's like saying you didn't like Winnie the pooh
well duh
are you 7?

not even gonna get into lotr (if you made it past book2 intro you deserve a medal) but if you enjoyed it at all you should read the silmarillion
just make sure you skip like the first section as it deals more with universe/god building rather than middle earth

these are not (imo) fair examples of epic fantasy
if you want a better example try the codex alera series
imo it's great for fantasy newbies due to it's fast paced high action nature

RE: Create-A-Card Competition
To be fair I read the Hobbit in 7th grade and Harry Potter in 4th grade so I'm not sure that's the issue. But I also read Lord of The Rings last year so it's not like I haven't read an epic fantasy since I was ten. And it's also worth noting that I don't read often. I haven't read an entire book in half a year, I think.

RE: Create-A-Card Competition
Reading (in my experience) is really something you have to make time for
and that can be difficult when you're just not into whatever it is you're trying to read

but yeah I just don't think it's a good idea to judge the epic fantasy genre on lotr because it was the "first" epic fantasy
meaning that a lot has improved since then
the writers are slowly learning how to avoid the various pitfalls that come with writing about wizards and magic and such

it's like reading/watching those old buck Rogers and flash Gordon comics/shows/movies and judging sci fi on that only without having watched star wars or star trek or firefly or the matrix or stargate ect ect

not saying like "OMG go read another book you dick"
just that if you're in the mood to read maybe give epic fantasy another try and read something a bit newer and not geared towards a younger crowd
alternatively just wait for some of the more epic fantasy series to be made into films
because of the huge success lotr and hp had it's likely to happen in the next 5 years

oh also avoid fantasy tv shows
I personally haven't seen a good one yet

But I did like Duck Rodgers for whatever that's worth. Not Buck Rodgers, though.

Oh wait, I watch some animes that'd probably count as high fantasies. Like Kekkaishi and... actually that's probably about it.
