I've never chosen the Grass type as my starter the first time through...this time I probably will. Just because it's the least ugly.

The statement baffled me too. I almost always start with fire types (partially as there seems to be less of them in the world). I would occasionally mix it up with a grass type, but I NEVER chose water. Probably because there's a shitload of water types. Even though the water types are generally pretty cool when they're evolved.

Squirtle used to be my favorite Pokemon so I chose that at first. I also really liked Mudkip for some reason... I think I just like the idea of ground type pokemon as starters. I think I've chosen grass every other time (including for Leaf Green). Though honestly I just choose whatever I think looks the cutest. It's worked well so far with my getting an incredibly fertile female Turtwig that liked pumping out baby girls like they were just as common as boys.

They just keep getting uglier and uglier.

Entai
Raikou
Suicune
Groudon
Palkia
Manaphy
Heatran

I used to dislike Kyogre but it's grown on me
and I kind of want to add Moltres to that list but it's gen 1 and I have to love it unconditionally

Moltres looks like a pyromaniac woodpecker with a glandular disorder.

And a beer belly.

Edit: The only nice thing that can really be said about the original legendaries (which were almost all ugly) is that they were minimalistic compared to the later additions to the franchise. In fact, this hodge podge, over designed trend is my biggest problem with post Blue/Green/Red/Yellow games. Each generation they're slappin' more crap onto the pokemon in an attempt to differentiate them and all it's doing is giving us more reasons to hate them. And by us, I mean me.

Funny you mention Shaymin. I like the sky form over the hedgehog form.

These look straight out of a Yugioh Booster.

I like both of Shaymin's forms, but its land form is the most adorable. (And by that I mean the most adorable of any Pokemon ever, not just the most adorable of Shaymin's two forms.)

Diamond/Pearl/Plat was just overloaded with new legendary or single event like entities like them; Rotom, Uxie, Mesprit, Azelf, Dialga, Palkia, Heatran, Regigigas, Giratina, Cresslia, Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus. We really disd't need so many of them in one generation of the game.

They could have totally made the whole Cresslia/Darkrai thing into the next game's story instead of the light dark weird digimon things there. Cresslia and Darkrai even have the whole light and dark motif already set.

Now that you mention it, Cressla really didn't have much in the way of a plot, did it?
